'4 New Sensations: Rob Sherwood' by director Zara Hayes "I was commissioned to make this film to showcase the work of painter Rob Sherwood, a finalist in '4 New Sensations', an art prize from the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. Rather than resorting to interview, we thought we'd experiment to create something entirely visual and cut it to specially commissioned music. Rob was interested in urban landscapes, so we took the camera within walking distance of his studio in London and started to collect a series of wide shots with interesting composition. In the edit, we chose to highlight certain figures in the scenes according to the colours he uses in his paintings. We cut the City scenes against a series of home-made animations (which were filmed from a computer screen with Microsoft Paint). The final third of the film is entirely made from digital stills cut at 24 stills per second, to create a stop-motion effect of the painting being created."
